Urad Dal (black Lentils) Bada or Urad Dal Vada Recipe

Urad_Dal_Vada

Vada or "Urad Dal Vada or Bada" is a deep-fried snack made from black lentils, here's a recipe to help you make it:

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup split black lentils (urad dal)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • A handful of fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying
Instructions:
  1. Wash the urad dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 4-5 hours or overnight. Drain the soaked dal before using.
  2. In a blender or food processor, grind the soaked and drained urad dal to a smooth paste. You can add a small amount of water (about 1-2 tablespoons) while grinding if needed.
  3. Transfer the ground dal paste to a mixing bowl. Add chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, asafoetida, cumin seeds, coriander leaves, and salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  4. Heat oil for deep frying in a deep pan or kadai over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.
  5. Wet your hands with water to prevent the batter from sticking. Take a small portion of the dal mixture and shape it into a round ball or flat disc shape, similar to a vada or pakora.
  6. Gently slide the shaped vada into the hot oil. You can fry multiple vadas at a time, depending on the size of your pan, but avoid overcrowding.
  7. Fry the vadas on medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides. Flip them occasionally to ensure even frying.
  8. Once the vadas are cooked, remove them from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain the excess oil by placing them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  9. Repeat the process with the remaining batter to make more vadas.
  10. Serve the hot and crispy vadas as a snack with chutney or sauce of your choice.
Note: You can also add additional spices and herbs to the batter, such as red chili powder, fennel seeds, or curry leaves, to enhance the flavor according to your preference.

Enjoy your homemade Urad Dal Vada!
